Linda's big chop!

By Linda Parsons

I'm fundraising for Guide Dogs Queensland

Last time when I had quite a length cut off my hair, a friend asked what I did with my hair.  My hair was cut and dropped to the floor.  I’ve not forgotten that conversation.  This time, my hair won’t drop to the floor.  This time, I plan to donate my hair for (cancer) wigs and (hopefully) raise funds for Guide Dogs Queensland.

It’s taken about ten years to get my hair to this length, and although I love my hair,  I’ve decided it’s time to play with a shorter hair style.  There’s been times that I rearrange my sitting position to pull my hair free. Sometimes, I close the car door, then have to open it to bring my hair in; or need to move my hair so I can do up the seat belt or take care to not have my hair recoiled in the seat belt.  Often, I lean down to the floor and catch my hair as it goes towards the ground.  Comments from people can be nicely funny, such as “is that ‘your’ hair?”  I absolutely love being able to do so many different styles with my hair.  One of my favourite styles would have to be decorating for Christmas!.. putting Christmas bows or Christmas baubles into my hair style.  I think about the weather or what I’m doing, for which way to do my hair for the day.  Windy weather, hot weather, kayaking and gardening is a boring plait tie-up style; cold weather could be wrap my hair around my neck (like a scarf); Pilates would be a silly-looking bun on the top of my head; wearing a hat needs a thought about which hat and the style to fit my hair within or below or through a hair-hole of my hat.  Most of my beanies and hats have a hair-hole at the back.  Packing my suitcase to go away, also requires throwing in just a few hair decorations!  I do like to play with my styles and use different hair accessories, for socialising, as well as for my (paid) work and (volunteer) work.  Amusingly, once when I was away on tour, a group of passengers said to me at breakfast that they were eager each morning to see me, so they could see my hair style for that day!

We’ve arranged with ‘THE WEEKEND SOCIETY’ from Sandgate to do the cut on the 5th September.  (They waste no hair, including sweeping the floor so the hair can be used for oil spills.).
